Minot Renaissance Zone Tax Exemption

100% property tax exemption on qualifying residential improvements; 5-year exemption for improvements of 50% or more of property value, 8-year exemption for improvements of 75% or more

Exemption applies for 5 or 8 years depending on the percentage of value improvements made.

Eligibility

    No income limits.
  • First-time buyer required: No
  • Geographic restrictions:
    Property must be located within Minot's designated Renaissance Zone (currently 40.5 of an allowed 42 blocks are assigned). For residential properties, qualifying investment must be at least 20% in structural improvements (cosmetic repairs do not count).
  • Homebuyer education required: No

How to Apply for Minot Renaissance Zone Tax Exemption

Step 1: Renaissance Zone projects must be approved by the City of Minot AND the State of North Dakota BEFORE any qualifying activity (purchase, construction, lease, or rehabilitation) takes place. Contact the City of Minot Community and Economic Development Department to apply.

Notes

Recent 2024 legislative changes expanded benefits: 50% improvements unlock a 5-year exemption, 75%+ improvements unlock an 8-year exemption.
