  • Income limits: Household income at or below 80% of Area Median Income (AMI) as published by HUD for the City of Detroit.
  • First-time buyer required: Yes — Must not have held marketable interest in property for the last 3 years.
  • Geographic restrictions: Must purchase a 1-2 unit property within the City of Detroit.
  • Homebuyer education required: Yes

How to Apply for Detroit Down Payment Assistance Program

Step 1: Complete a HUD-approved Homebuyer Education course. Get pre-qualified by a lender. Find a home and get a signed purchase agreement. Apply online at detroitmi.gov/DPA. Must contribute a minimum of $1,000 toward the purchase. Must have lived in the City of Detroit for the last 12 months, or prove you lost a home to property tax foreclosure within Detroit between 2010 and 2016.

Round 3 launched March 2026 with $9 million in CDBG and CDBG-DR funding. Expected to help nearly 450 first-time homebuyers. Program has already helped 794 residents purchase homes in prior rounds. Call the Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine at 866-313-2520 (option 3) for assistance.
