Interest-free 2nd mortgage. Repaid only at sale, refinance, or when no longer the primary residence.

Eligibility

  • Income limits: Low- to moderate-income first-time buyers; limits vary by household size.
  • First-time buyer required: Yes — No applicant has owned a principal residence in the past 3 years.
  • Credit score minimum: 660
  • Geographic restrictions: DuPage County, Illinois. NOT available in Aurora or Bolingbrook. Must be a single-family home, condo, townhouse, or half of a duplex (no multifamily). Home must pass DuPage County Housing Quality Standards inspection.
  • Homebuyer education required: Yes

How to Apply for DuPage Homestead Program

Step 1: Attend a Gateway to Homeownership Orientation or DHOC Homebuyer Education class before beginning the application. Apply through HOME DuPage (DHOC) and work with an approved participating lender. Contact HOME DuPage to confirm current purchase price limits and income caps.

Created in 1992 to help first-time buyers priced out of DuPage. The ,000 closing grant component is not available for purchases in Naperville.
