Converts an existing Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental subsidy into a monthly homeownership subsidy that helps pay the borrower's mortgage and housing expenses. The dollar amount is based on HAKC's voucher payment standard and the household's income. (Grant)
Monthly subsidy continues as long as the family remains income-eligible and meets HUD program rules.
Eligibility
- Income limits: Must be an existing HAKC Housing Choice Voucher participant who meets HUD minimum-income and employment requirements for the homeownership option.
- First-time buyer required: Yes — Must be a first-time homebuyer or not have owned a home during the last 3 years.
- Geographic restrictions: Property must be located within HAKC's jurisdiction in Kansas City, Missouri.
- Homebuyer education required: Yes
How to Apply for HAKC Section 8 Homeownership Program
Step 1: 1. Must be an active HAKC Housing Choice Voucher participant in good standing. 2. Contact the HAKC Family Self-Sufficiency / Homeownership program at 816-968-4150 to express interest. 3. Complete the required homeownership counseling and HUD-approved homebuyer education. 4. Get pre-approved with a participating lender. 5. Find a qualifying property and complete both the independent home inspection and HAKC Housing Quality Standards (HQS) inspection. 6. Close on the home and begin receiving the monthly homeownership subsidy in place of rental assistance.
