Affordable zero-interest mortgage on a Habitat-built or rehabilitated home (Zero-Interest Loan)

Mortgage is structured as a zero-interest, affordable-payment loan. Home remains the family's once the loan is paid in full.

Eligibility

  • Income limits: Must earn below 80% of the area median income. Must also demonstrate ability to pay for the home.
  • First-time buyer required: No
  • Geographic restrictions: Serves Black Hawk, Butler, Bremer, and Buchanan Counties in northeast Iowa.
  • Homebuyer education required: Yes

How to Apply for Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program

Step 1: Apply online at webuildhabitat.org or call the Waterloo office. Qualifying applicants complete 300 hours of sweat equity helping build homes and take required homebuyer education courses. Selection is based on need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner.

More than 330 people are on the current waitlist to apply. Application windows open periodically — check the website for current status. Also offers a Critical Home Repair program for existing low-income homeowners.
