Eligibility
- Income limits: Household income generally between 30% and 80% of HUD Area Median Income (AMI) for Jasper or Newton County, MO. Must demonstrate ability to pay an affordable Habitat mortgage.
- First-time buyer required: Yes — Applicants must not currently own a home and must demonstrate a housing need such as substandard, overcrowded, or unaffordable current housing.
- Geographic restrictions: Applicant must live or work in Jasper County, Missouri (primary service area) for at least one year. Joplin Area Habitat also serves Newton County, MO and Cherokee County, KS.

How to Apply for Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program
Step 1: Confirm service area eligibility You must currently live or work in Jasper County, MO for at least one year. Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity also serves Newton County, MO and Cherokee County, KS.
Step 2: Submit an Interest Form for Homeownership Visit joplinhabitat.org/apply-for-a-home and complete the online Interest Form. This adds you to the contact list for the next open application cycle. Applications are not accepted year-round.
Step 3: Attend an informational session Habitat holds informational sessions before each application window. You will be notified by email and phone when the next session is scheduled.
Step 4: Complete the full application when the window opens Provide proof of income for all household adults, two years of tax returns, current housing conditions documentation, and a credit authorization.
Step 5: Participate in home visit and selection interview A Family Selection Committee volunteer will visit your current home to verify housing need. You will complete an in-person interview to discuss your situation and long-term housing goals.
Step 6: Complete 200 hours of sweat equity If selected as a partner family, you will contribute approximately 200 hours of volunteer work on the build of your home and on other Habitat projects, plus complete financial literacy and homebuyer education courses.
Step 7: Purchase your home with a 0% interest affordable mortgage At completion, the home is deeded to your family and financed with a 30-year mortgage at 0% interest. Monthly payments are set to be affordable based on your income and include escrow for taxes and insurance.

Partner families are selected based on three criteria: need for decent affordable housing, ability to pay an affordable mortgage, and willingness to partner (including completing approximately 200 hours of sweat equity volunteer work).
