How much assistance
Up to $10,500 (Forgivable Loan)
Zero-interest deferred forgivable loan secured by a second mortgage and note on the property. The note is forgiven at the end of the term as long as the loan is not in default.
Eligibility
- Income limits: At or below 120% of the Area Median Income for the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area based on household size
- First-time buyer required: Yes — Must be a first-time homebuyer.
- Geographic restrictions: Property must be located within Hernando County. Purchase price must not exceed 90% of the average area purchase price.
- Homebuyer education required: Yes
How to Apply for Hernando County SHIP Purchase Assistance Program
Step 1: Obtain a pre-approval from a mortgage lender before applying. Applications are available online and at the Housing and Supportive Services Department at 621 W. Jefferson Street, Brooksville, FL 34601. Contact Health and Human Services at 352-540-4338 for more information.

Funded through the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) program. Hernando County received an estimated $1,468,462 in SHIP funds for State Fiscal Years 2025-2026. Eligible housing includes existing homes, new construction, and housing needing rehabilitation including single-family homes, condominiums, and townhomes. Assistance may be applied toward down payment, closing costs, and principal reduction.
