Up to $150,000 (Grant)

Grant does not need to be repaid. Homeowner owns the home while the community land trust owns the land. Resale restrictions apply to keep homes permanently affordable.

Eligibility

  • Income limits: Gross annual household income below 80% AMI.
  • First-time buyer required: Yes — Must be a first-time homebuyer or have not owned a home in the last 3 years.
  • Geographic restrictions: Home must be located within an incorporated area of the City of Houston.
  • Homebuyer education required: Yes

How to Apply for Houston Community Land Trust Homebuyer Choice Program

Step 1: Complete an 8-hour HUD-certified homebuyer education course and a CLT Orientation class, then apply when applications reopen. Must contribute $3,000-$5,000 toward closing costs.

Notes

Not currently accepting new applications as of early 2026. Will reopen once additional funding is secured. Must maintain at least $1,000 in personal funds after closing. Eligible properties include single-family homes and townhomes only.
