Homebuyer Programs in Leawood, KS (2026)
Leawood is one of the most affluent communities in the Kansas City metro, located in northern Johnson County and known for its upscale neighborhoods, Town Center Plaza, and proximity to corporate employers. The median home price in Leawood is approximately $710,000, well above the price ceilings of most state and federal homebuyer assistance programs. Importantly, the KHRC First-Time Homebuyer Program is not available in Johnson County, so Leawood buyers cannot tap that forgivable second mortgage. The Kansas Housing Assistance Program (KHAP) does remain available statewide and offers up to 4% in cash assistance for down payment and closing costs through participating lenders. The Habitat for Humanity Kansas City Down Payment Assistance Program offers up to $10,000 in grant funds for households at or below 80% AMI in Johnson County, and Habitat KC's zero-interest mortgage homebuyer program is available to selected families. Federal loan programs (FHA, VA, USDA in eligible rural pockets) and the Kansas First-Time Home Buyer Savings Account tax deduction also remain available to Leawood buyers.

How to Apply
Check your eligibility. Leawood is in Johnson County, which is excluded from the KHRC First-Time Homebuyer Program. KHAP and the Habitat KC programs do remain available. KHAP has its own income and purchase-price limits set by the participating lender; Habitat KC requires 80% AMI or below and a debt-to-income ratio under 45%.
Complete homebuyer education. Most assistance programs require a HUD-approved homebuyer education certificate. Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc. is a regional HUD-approved provider whose courses satisfy KHAP and Habitat KC requirements.
Contact a local housing partner. For the Habitat KC programs, apply at habitatkc.org/dpa once you have an active purchase contract for a home in Johnson County. Johnson County Housing Services administers HOME and CDBG programs that primarily fund rehabilitation rather than direct buyer DPA — confirm current programs at jocogov.org.
Get pre-approved for a mortgage. Find a KHAP-participating lender to originate KHAP cash assistance alongside a 30-year fixed first mortgage. Federal FHA, VA, and conventional loans paired with KHAP follow standard county loan limits, which are higher in Johnson County than in much of Kansas.
Find a home within program limits. Most assistance programs cap purchase price below Leawood's typical $700,000-plus market — buyers will need to find more modestly priced homes (often older properties or condos) to qualify for KHAP, Habitat KC DPA, or Habitat KC mortgages.
Submit your application. KHAP reservations are made year-round through participating lenders. Habitat KC funding is limited and processed in the order applications are received.
